A recent study examined the effectiveness of telehealth to reduce utilisation of external health services by residents of residential aged care facilities (RACFs). The model under scrutiny involved a geriatric consultation via video conferencing in residential aged care setting; assisted by an online comprehensive geriatric assessment and care planning model utilizing onsite gerontic nursing support. It was designed to address a series of problems encountered by clinicians and administrators within RACFs in Australia, including inadequate access to specialists, professional isolation of nurses, sub-optimal care standards, and avoidable use of hospital services in emergencies. The presentation will outline this study’s findings and put these in context of the current status of telegeriatrics in Australia.
